Blacksmithing Course For Kids
This course is designed for kids ranging in age from 8 to 13. Children will learn how to shape and bend metal using a hammer and fire. They will be guided through the forging of several items that they can they then take home with them. While learning about the plasticity of metal, children will also have the opportunity to be creative with their projects and come up with their own unique designs.
Students will forge three items:
- A hook
- A toasting fork
- A keychain that they will have a hand in designing
Safety is very important at Two Smiths. We provide shop safety and orientation training for kids, and provide the necessary safety equipment: eye protection, gloves and ear plugs. Participants need to wear comfortable cotton or wool clothing (NO synthetic fibres) and bring along a long sleeve shirt. No shorts, skirts or open-toed shoes please.
Lots of young kids are particularly drawn to knife and sword making. We don’t make knives or swords in this course but we do take a close look at the role of forged iron over the past 3000 years and its primary function to both protect and also serve as a vital tool.
Children will need to bring a lunch on Saturday, but on Sunday we will clear out one of the forges and replace it with charcoal to test out our freshly forged toasting forks to cook sausages (or a vegetarian alternative).
