Two Smiths designs and builds architectural ironwork, furniture and sculpture in forged copper, steel, aluminum and bronze. Much of the work we do is collaborative and almost every piece that leaves the shop is a prototype. We take on a fair number of jobs without really knowing how we’re going to achieve the desired result precisely because it forces us to experiment, to develop new tools and to invent new processes.
Copper Tree. copper, stainless steel, brass. Rockwood, ON 2006
We came up with the concept of a tree for this site that's located at a turnaround on a private trail. It was designed with the idea that the child living there might collect bits of nature - dried seed pods, husks of dragonflies, abandoned wasp nests, and store them in the trunk of the tree for safe keeping. In one of the compartments we stored a whole series of etched copper plates with plant and animal identification images - relevant to the site - of course - etched into their surfaces.
These driveway gates are installed at a residence on the Bruce Peninsula. The horizontal lines are meant to convey layers of earth, the verticals plants growing up through the layers.
